Eric Clapton is a music icon. Everyone knows who he is but this book really fills in the details.

Clapton's autobiography covers his entre life so far and to do takes alot of book, 328 pages of obscenely small type. In a normal sized type this would easilly top 500 pages of dirt. Yeah dirt. Eric Clapton writes about much of his life so honestly that it's quite shocking at times. If a biographer was writing it you might not even believe half of it.

His early life has more twists and intrigue than a Dickins novel and to say anymore about it would spoil the fun. Suffice it to say he had an interesting childhood growing up in a small English town.

As he picks up his first guitar and starts learning to play his life starts to take off quite quickly. The stories of how he got into his first bands and the stories about the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and Cream would easilly be more than enough material to write an entire boook and it's in this part of the book that it really shines. The connections between all the rock legends of the day are amazing and Eric Clapton was right there for much of it. There are so many parts about the Beatles (especially George Harrison who he spent much time with), the Stones and other bands that tell you as much about them and the times as about Clapton.

I must say Eric Clapton is not who I thought he was when I picked up the book. The way he could chase and obsess over a girl is absolutely astounding, especially when he spent years trying to steal George Harrison's wife right nder his nose! And I mean YEARS he spent trying to steal her. And once he.... you know I can't spoil it, it's absolutely legendary.

About half way through the book he starts in with the heavy drinking and things get pretty dark. The book gets more introspective and less about the music and the world of rock and more about his demons as he withdraws into himself, still a good read but lacking all the "wow!"'s if the first half of the book. Don't worry still plenty of womanizing and pathetic woman chasing to keep things interesting. It's during this part of the book that I tellingasking myself "I can't believe he's really writing this about himself". It has to take some serious soul-searching or balls or obliviousness to write about all the unbelievable shitty things you've done with such candor.

The last part of the book deals with his recovery, his family and has good bits but is probably most interesting to recovering alcoholics.

I'll be keeping this book and will be recommending it to friends. I'm not sure if I'll ever read the entire thing again, but I'll be reading the first half again and again.
